Surrey Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2017 - 2022

Welcome to Surrey’s Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. This was developed between October 2016 and May 2017 and becomes the statutory syllabus for RE in all Surrey schools (maintained, academies, free schools and voluntary controlled) from 1st September 2017. The syllabus has to be revised every five years by statute and will therefore be revised again in 2022. 

Please read the Introduction carefully as this contains all the legal statutory requirements.  Schools should also read the introductory pages for each relevant key stage as these contain further details of these requiremements.

Non-statutory support materials for RE

The support materials that you will find on this page can be adapted by schools to suit their setting.  They are designed to support the statutory content of the Agreed Syllabus which is shown within grey boxes on each unit plan.  Schools must ensure that they cover this content in the learning that they plan using these support materials. 
Most unit plans from the syllabus have been expanded to describe a journey of learning that is enquiry-based.  The plans also include skills that pupils will practise, key vocabulary, and suggestions for pupil progress, as well as some background information for teachers and an assessment grid based on the expected attainment for the unit.

Primary Religious Education Subject Leader Network Meetings

These local networking groups are now very well established and regarded as a useful forum for RE subject leaders in schools using the Surrey Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. The meetings usually have a specified focus, which is suggested by the group, although there are always opportunities to share good practice and useful resources, as well as a chance to explore bigger issues in the wider world of Religious Education. In the past, session focuses have included Religious Education & Story, using ICT, assessment, and visits to places of worship. 

Participants will have opportunities to network with colleagues in the local area, receive updates on local and national developments in RE and gain an awareness of useful resources in RE.
