Bursar Training Package

A programme of training including courses and onsite support for all new bursars, enabling them to become more effective in their new role.  Package includes:

  • Four training courses covering a financial overview, financial planning, period-end procedures and financial monitoring and reporting
  • Four visits providing one-to-one support including:
    • An initial induction visit
    • Support for the first period end
    • Support for the first FMR
    • Follow up visit with a consultant

All above finance courses will be booked on behalf of the school as part of this package.

Course Overview
This course is designed for Surrey maintained schools and will develop understanding of the responsibilities of the headteacher for the school budget, financial management and compliance to the financial regulations of the Surrey Scheme of Local Management. We will look at funding streams, the LA's accounting structure and reporting requirements, as well as looking at benchmarking and value for money.

Develop your understanding of Financial Accounting Processes

Course Overview
This session will cover SIMS FMS double entry bookkeeping and control accounts and the year end reconciliation process including producing the CFR. The course will demonstrate how to identify and reconcile differences in the accounts and help you to maximise the use of FMS for reporting. There will be an overview of the Local Bank Account reconciliation process and year end accruals policy and procedure.

Course Overview
This course looks at what you can do to protect your school's financial assets and demonstrate a low financial risk when considering the control measures required in the Statement of Internal Control.

We demonstrate how the headteacher/bursar can oversee delegated financial responsibilities in the school office. It will cover an understanding of the use of checks and balances, the signs to look for, checks to have in place and how to manage the discovery of impropriety.

This course is aimed at Surrey maintained schools only.

Understanding the Formula and Forecasting Effectively

Understanding the Formula and Forecasting Effectively

Course Overview
This course provides an explanation of the basis of Surrey's existing funding formula, and the changes following full implementation of the National funding Formula. There will be an opportunity to renew the local authority's verification and forecasting spread sheet to identify common sources of error and maximise its effective use for future planning, as well as an opportunity to enter your own school's data. This will be relevant to school business managers in mainstream primary and secondary phase schools.

Please note: Participants should bring a laptop with the verification and forecasting tool downloaded to the desktop, together with the school's funding letter.

Course OverviewThis 2 hour course will provide an explanation of the procedures required to complete the financial year end including closing the financial year and reconciling the schools accounts with County.

This course is aimed at bursars who are either new in the role or those who would benefit from a refresher.

This course explores the key changes in financial management when a school converts to an Academy as well as exploring the aspects of due diligence which should be considered prior to conversion. This will be relevant to schools looking to join a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) or considering forming or growing their own MAT. PLEASE NOTE: There is no charge for Schools that have a Finance Service Level Agreement Package B with Strictly Education 4S.
